Aimless (1987)

Aimless is an experiment made by Kevin Altis back in 1986 which gave birth to this demoscene-like toy.  Aimless is not a screen saver, because you have to manually launch the demo. It features 2 demo modes, one is lines and the other one is...

Bahaus (1986)

Bahaus is what looks like a demo.  It draws rectangles of various sizes at random positions, alterning between B&W.  Clicking exists.  There doesn't seem to be anything else about it.

Bouncing Black Square

Bouncing Black Square (1986)

Bouncing Black Square is an extremely simple 1.2KB app that only displays a big square that bounces on the edges of the screen.  Not sure if it was meant to be used as a screensaver or as a demo.  There is nothing else, no menu, no about...

Brooke (1987)

Brooke looks like a simple demo where a scanned female face blinks her eyes.  There doesn't seem to be anything else to it, no about screen, version info or anything at all.

Galaxy (1985)

Galaxy is probably the smallest (1.7KB !!) program for Mac from 1985.  All it does is display moving white dots almost identical to the 1992 Windows 3.1 screensaver called "Starfield".  There is absolutely nothing else to it, no...

GomerFun (1986)

GomerFun renders a couple colorful patterns across the entire screen (altough, since resolutions in 1986 were not that high, some patterns obviously won't fill 1024x768).  Not much information available on this very old piece of software,...

Happy New Year

Happy New Year (1984)

Happy New Year is a 8.7KB window that displays a xmas greetings card with animated falling snow and a snowman.  You can read: "To the staff of MacNET and my fellow sysops at Mac Symposium & Health Areas, my wishes for the best new year...

IconBounce (1985)

IconBounce is a very early Macintosh kind of screen saver.  It's more like just a demo that bounces B&W icons all over the place.  This app features 1980's apps/games icons, some are more obscure than others.

Iconer (1987)

Iconer can be used as a prank.  All it does is on launch, it randomly pops thousands of B&W system icons to fill your desktop.  You can stop it using CMD-Q.

MacFishTank (2001)

MacFishTank simply puts a bunch of big green fish swimming across the screen while you work.  This RealBasic app is silent. From the author: MacFishTank was devised one day, as a joke by Kris Harris, the overlord of Wild Cat Software. After...

Meltdown (1988)

Meltdown is a super tiny app (1.9KB!!) that makes your 9" monitor screen melt :) Meltdown is a much cruder and crashier clone of Melt.

Mesmer (1987)

Mesmer draws colorful sinusoidal function lines on the right half of the screen and then cycles through the colors along those lines. To end the simulation, click the mouse and wait for 10-15 seconds until the cycle is complete.  It will...

MouseTrap (1985)

MouseTrap is an early 1980's programming demo that featured a mouse capture in a square in the center of the screen.  That's all there is to it.

Optical (1987)

Animates a pattern in a window.  You click anywhere and it closes.  That's it.

Psych Out

Psych Out (1995)

Psych is a nice demo with a chiptune playing in the background.

Psychedelia (1988)

Psychedelia lets you choose a pattern and lets you move the mouse across the screen.  The pattern animates in B&W around your cursor's position. Psychedelia 1.4 comes with 13 animated patterns.

Rae (1986)

Rae animates smiley icons falling down and piling up at the bottom of your screen.  Could be used as a screensaver almost.  Click to exit Rae.

Random Dots

Random Dots (1988)

Random Dots is a small public domain night sky simulation app.  All it does is light up random pixels and color cycling them.  It cannot be used as a screensaver either, that's why I put it under the demoscene.

Vanlandingham (1986)

Vanlandingham is the Macintosh's answer to the Amiga's "boing!" demo.  When you launch the app, it will take 20 to 40 seconds for the animation to start, depending on your hardware, since the program draws at high resolution...
