Preferred Formats for Software Preservation

Preparing files or discs are critical to the preservation of software here on the Macintosh Repository's archive and elsewhere for that matter. This article, although not exhaustive, should provide members with the knowledge necessary to gain a foothold of the terminology, a brief background and some possible steps to prepare loose files and physical discs for upload. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: DO NOT ZIP OR MOVE AN OLD MAC...

1980's Mac w/ 16MB of RAM randomly crashes, even though it's been recapped?

If you've got a 1980's Macintosh (such as the Macintosh II) with more than 8MB of RAM, make sure to install Mode32 as all models from the 1980's (68K) came with a 24-bit addressing ROM, which can only reach up to 8,388,608 bytes (8MB) and nothing higher than that.  All Macs starting from 1993 came with a 32-bit clean ROM which pushed the RAM addressing limit so high (4GB) that most Mac models could not even physically reach it...

25 Years of Chiptune

25 Years of Chiptune is a list of the best chiptunes (sometimes very loosely related to chiptunes) that I've gathered over the last few years.  Feel free to recommend some missing and/or better than what's here for some of the years!   ***** 1984 Daley Thompson's Decathlon (2) - David Dunn / Martin Galway - (1984) - C64 chiptune - YouTube ***** 1985 One Man & His Droid - Rob Hubbard - (1985) - C64 chiptune -...

Apple keyboards and buttons, which key is what.

Ok, where are the buttons and what do they look like?   1. Command Button (⌘): The Command button, denoted by the ⌘ symbol, is a key that is unique to Apple keyboards. It is typically located on either side of the spacebar, next to the Control button. The Command button is widely used for keyboard shortcuts in Macintosh systems. 2. Option Button (⌥): The Option button, also known as the Alt button, is represented by the ⌥...

Building Mini vMac for Windows 10 using the Windows Subsystem for Linux

Mini vMac's site includes extensive documentation on how to build the emulator (https://www.gryphel.com/c/minivmac/build.html).  However, I found that these instructions didn't cover my use case, which was a Windows 10 machine running Ubuntu in the Windows Subsystem for Linux. My build unfortunately ended up being a bit of a hack, because the Makefile generation did not quite get the command lines for the C compiler and tools...

Can I somehow interface communicate between my iMac G3 and my Windows ME PC?

Alright so I'm sure that's a bit of a weird question but here is the situation- my PC is a Windows ME running Gateway from like 1998 or so. It's mainly an office machine and it's the place where I like to compile all of my stuff into one organized place. I do alot of stuff on my iMac "Green Morpho" and I find it soooo annoying having to transfer the files floppy by floppy. I'd use flash drives but the mac is in...

Cannot lock, unlock or delete a file under Mac OS 9?

There was a bug under Mac OS 9 (and maybe Mac OS 8 too?) that, under a special circumstance, prevented some files to be locked, unlocked or even deleted.  They would sit there in your trash forever and prevent you to empty it even when the OPTION KEY is held down.  Rebuilding the desktop does NOT resolve the issue. Trying to get file info with ResEdit results in the following error: The reason this is happening is generally...

Chat v3 features/improvements/ideas/suggestions :)

Alright, so next week in late february at some point, we're going to start coding chat v3.  We've been on chat v2 for about 2 years, so it's time for improving it.  Here are the initial ideas, some based on previous feedback, some to improve things that I already hated from day one in v2 :P   DONE - Dark mode, [color/themes: not done, users can use plugins like "Firefox Color"] We need dark mode...

Corrupted .zip archive? Unexpected end of file?

Getting an "Unexpected end of file" or "There was a problem while reading the contents" error when trying to expand a .zip archive under Windows, Linux or even with an utility like The Unarchiver under Mac OS X? I was stumped to discover recently that, sometimes, Apple's Archive Utility app that is bundled with OSX is the only ZIP utility that can successfully expand those .zip files by ignoring invalid ZIP...

Corrupted/blank files when expanding a ZIP under Mac OS 9 and seeing a __MACOSX folder?

If you used a Mac back in the 90's, then you remember that among Mac users, nobody ever used ZIP format for compressing files.  Everybody used SIT files instead and some used HQX, BIN or CPT files, but not a single Mac user zipped their files.  The reason is simple: ZIP files are not compatible with Mac resource forks (old Mac files before Mac OS X) and zipping an old Mac file (such as a Mac OS 9 application program) would destroy...

Creating a Mac Font Suitcase with Fontforge

Sometimes a classic Mac application opens a document that expects a font that is not installed. For instance, here is Macromedia Director lamenting the absence of Arial: Installed fonts are in the HD/System Folder/Fonts directory. If you look there, you may find some TTF files that suggest you can transfer TTF fonts from a more modern system, restart your application and resolve the issue, but not all TrueType fonts work with the classic...

Dealing with old apple hardware. Logic Board Serial Number issues.

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Welcome to the first in hopefully a series of articles from me covering older apple hardware service and support matters, these articles are my own and do not contain copyrighted content. My history with Apple goes back well over 23 years ago as a user / owner and 16 years back when I qualified through my college  to become a registered Apple Service Engineer supporting a 4 campus college complex with over...

For Macintosh computers, what are the reset and interrupt buttons, and what should I do if my computer doesn't have them?

In addition to a power button, some Macintosh models have one or two other buttons: a reset button and often an interrupt, or programmer's, button. The former is typically used to recover from crashes that leave the system unresponsive, while the latter is for debugging and applying firmware updates. Where they appear on your computer, or even if they do, depends on which model you have. For more information, see the following...

Formaat indelingen voor software behoud

Het voorbereiden van bestanden of programmatuur op diskettes en schijven is essentieel voor het behoud van software voor hier in het archief van de Macintosh Repository en/of elders. Getting Started (WIP)

(the [messy] WIP guide) Hi enthusiasts or nostalgics from the not too far future! Ready to undust some of the 80's, 90's or early 2000's Macintosh Software treasures and feel what it was like in those earlier computer days but you're afraid it will be too difficult or obscure to do that by yourself? Fear no more, here's a small guide that will get you started!   Step 1: Real hardware... or emulation? First of...

HFS max partition sizes

In 1985, only a year after the first Macintosh came out, HFS (later referred to as "Mac OS Standard") was introduced and replaced MFS.  HFS required Macintosh System Software 2.1 and was welcome to support the HD20, Apple's first 20 megabytes hard drive that had just came out for the Mac 512K.  Can you imagine storing 50 floppy disks (400KB each back then) into a single device? Back in the day, this was huge! Now, we...
