Unable to activate Office for Mac 2011 ?

I tried installing Microsoft Office:Mac 2011 on my Mac Mini and at the activation step I got the message that the activation servers couldn't be reached.

Today, when you try attempt to activate Office for Mac 2011, you may receive an error message "Online activation did not complete successfully because the activation server is temporarily unavailable."

I then looked around and found out perhaps some people at Microsoft were running out of glue and decide to do us a great favour by publising a file that can be downloaded and after nestled in your mac libary it will automatically register and license your copy of office:mac without even the need of entering a serial number. How fantastic is that?

To fix this issue, you'll need to get the Microsoft Office 2011 license, and add it to your Mac.

How ? Well these are the steps:

Add the file to the following location:

  1. First download the license file from here LicenseFile

  2. Close all of your Microsoft Office applications.

  3. Launch Finder.

  4. Unzip the downloaded file

  5. Then drag the expanded file com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist file to the desktop.

  6. Select the Go on the top menu, then select Computer or just by pressing ⇧ (shift) ⌘ and C

  7. Open your system harddisk by double clicking Macintosh HD (or whatever name you gave it) to go to your local hard drive.

  8. Double click Library, then Preferences.

  9. Drag the file com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist from the desktop and drag it into the Preferences folder. Enter your Mac password if prompted.

  10. Open one of your Microsoft Office applications, the activation will occur quietly in the background.

  11. This will complete your activation of Office.

Congratulations !

Microsoft still host these information and file, and it will continue to live on MR to preserve it for the future.
