What is a .mar file?

A .mar file is a cross between an UNIX and a MacBinary archive.  Although a small group of individuals use it, there is no real point in using this format on Mac, except to make your archives as unlikely to be expanded by n00bs as possible.  You see, even though I'm sure that some genius, somewhere, will tell you that it's widely supported, it's hard to argue against the fact that even The Unarchiver and Stuffit Expander, the two most invaluable, "expand everything" archive expansion tools used through at least 30 years of Macintosh history, don't even know what the F .mar files are.  Windows will automatically transform any file that you rename with a .mar suffix to some sort of Microsoft Office Access Report Shortcut and Google will only tell you that .mar files are Mozilla's proprietary file format, just to mislead as many users as possible.  Truly an enjoyable, easy to use, archive format, so widespread and supported that only real geniuses use it.

What is a .mac file?

A .mac file is just a MAR encoded file (basically same as above).

How to use or extract .mar/.mac archives contents?

To expand a .mar archive, you have to use the MAR utility for your OS (if it exists).

Under Classic Mac OS (before Mac OS X)

Mac OS 6.x to Mac OS 9.2.2: MAR v0.2.0

Under Mac OS X
