What is MacMINIX 1.5.10.7?

MacMINIX is a port of MINIX to the Macintosh. MINIX, an operating system written by Andrew Tanenbaum to be similar to AT&T's UNIX, was released freely along with its source code so that it could be used, studied, and modified without restriction, something that was not possible with AT&T's UNIX.

Unlike other ports of MINIX that run directly on the computer hardware, MacMINIX runs on top of the Macintosh System Software. The last version of MacMINIX released was 1.5.10.7 (a “fake” version 1.5.10.8 was released by StrobeSoft USA). MacMINIX runs well on System 6, and there have been reports of it running on System 7, including on Power Macintosh computers. Additional reports indicate problems running on Mac OS 8. This might stem from the fact it is not 32-bit clean.
