What is The Ultimate Warrior?

The Ultimate Warrior is a HyperCard Dungeon Crawler Game developped by some college student (at that time) named Erick Ritchie, apparently.

It portrays a simple yet addictive RPG where most of the gamplay is about clicking on arrows and pushing the enter key to progress the text (though you can also play the game entirely by mouse clicking, it's just less tedious using enter). I actually have no clue what the story is about, as I have a natural tendency to just spam the enter key to skip through the introduction.
I played this game for the first time in 1996, and it stayed on my mind rent free ever since, so it shouldn't be too bad for a teenager project.

A full playthrough of the demo is actually quite simple (yeah, unfortunately this is just a demo, and my efforts to contact that Erick guy were in vain, as it seems like the mail adress he left in the files to provide him feedback in 95' doesn't work anymore 30 years later, for some reason).

  1. Select a class for your character. Either Babarian, Ninja or Paladin. The two last classes have the advantage to let you cast spells, such as Fireball for the Ninja.
  2. Smash that enter key to skip through the story.
  3. Go to the temple, say hi, and skip the text. The temple is where you heal and save (note that saving quits the game).
  4. Go to the shop, and buy the first weapon useable for your class. Equip that weapon (the name of the weapon must be shown in the character's stats on the left of the screen, in the bottom, or it's not actively equipped).
  5. Go back to the town and head to the tunnels. Indeed, you can go to the tavern, but aside from a guy that tells you to go to the tunnels, and the bartender offering you free beverages to get you drunk (which doesn't work though, your character is too much of a badass unfortunately), there isn't anything to do.
  6. If you decided to buy a weapon an have it equiped, skip to 7. If you forgot to equip it or just skipped 4, perish on your first monster. You shouldn't have gone bare handed. You get ressurected with 1 HP. Go to the temple and heal before going back.
  7. Travel through the dungeon and have fun.

The game is heavily based on RNG, and any hit, either from the character or a mob can range anywhere from 1 to 200 damage. In other words, while the game is not hard, it is very easy to die miserably on a weak enemy, even with the best gear, just because of bad luck. Just avoid getting there bare handed, and you will mostly be fine.

The demo dungeon only provides two levels, which will roughtly take you around 2 hours, and when you beat the boss at the end of the second level, all the monsters just stop spawning. You just got your hands on a pretty great treasure and potions, but all of this is useless, since you won't encounter a single monster in this playthrough anymore. Why? Good question. I told you I spent my time skipping the story so, I don't know.

The only thing you can do now is either start another playthrough with another class, or delete the demo. I would've adored a full game out of this, but I've yet to find the Erick guy. I'll keep you posted.
