  • ScreenMan control panel
  • Booting with a custom startup screen

What is ScreenMan?

ScreenMan is a very nice little control panel which lets you easily import, browse and set startup screen pictures that will display in the background while your Mac OS boots up (while it's loading extensions).  It accepts PICT picture files of almost any size.  ScreenMan has a randomizer routine and lets you define a weight for each of your picture, making them display more/less often from boot to boot.  The ON/OFF setting on the top/left corner is for randomizing.  You can also enable/disable each picture from the set while keeping them in the control panel with an ON/OFF switch on the right side while you have a picture selected in the list.  When in the ScreenMan control panel, you can double click the little preview picture in the top/right corner and it will display the picture in 100% zoom size over your screen to help you visualize what it will look like when you boot with it.

ScreenMan is definitely a small missing utility that should have shipped with Mac OS, very handy.

Compatibility notes

Runs on any Macintosh

System 6.x - Mac OS 9.2.2

Installation: This is a control panel.  To install it, place it in the Control Panels folder inside the System Folder and reboot.

Note: ScreenMan only uses 1KB of RAM and releases all the RAM used when booting is finished.  When opening the control panel tough, it uses 50KB + whatever your startup screen pictures size are worth (this can easily be 1MB).

Emulating this? It could probably run under: Basilisk II
