What is Sparkle?

Sparkle is a MPEG player and creator for System 7 and up.

Sparkle features:
- Standard Mac interface with menus and windows.
- Uses the QuickTime movie controller to control the MPEG viewing.
- MultiFinder friendly, with good backgrounding behavior.
- Saves MPEGs to QuickTime movies.
- Can open multiple files at once.
- Can open QuickTime movies and sets of PICTs.
- Can encode MPEGs.
- PowerMac native.

Although Apple improved QuickTime’s ability to deal with MPEG files, it’s still not always easy to get them to work correctly. Here’s another alternative: Sparkle. For a nominal fee of nothing, Sparkle not only plays QuickTime movies but also plays MPEG files and opens sets of PICT files (in order to convert them to a movie) — it can convert between these file formats. Expect to see more complete AppleScript support for batch conversions in the future.
