What is The Palace? The Palace was an unique, cross browser, visual chat experience client/server software suite. In the end of the 90's, The Palace was an innovative chat solution where you could connect to an array of different themed servers and take place as a guest (or a member) and explore different rooms, dress as different avatars (pictures) that you felt like on that occasion and have a chat with people in that room and add/remove props (like wearing a mustache or goggles, or whatever) in real time. When you typed messages in The Palace, the text appeared near your avatar as a cartoon bubble. You could also send messages in screaming and thinking bubbles or leave a sticky message stuck on the screen for hours (e.g.: BRB). The Palace could also play sounds, let users draw and some priviledged ones could even run programmed scripts which would execute various tasks. Moderators could for instance "jail" people for not behaving adequately, etc... Some skilled The Palace users have run their own servers where you could actually play small games by clicking on scripted room areas, executing tasks like playing step motion animations, music, sounds, change text, etc... A few The Palace servers, altough not supported by any of the original companies owning this software back in the days, are still running more than 20 years after its initial launch, which is totally remarkable... just like the social experience The Palace has constituted in the late 90's!
