Mac OS 8.0 Copland (Beta Builds)

What is Mac OS 8.0 Copland (Beta Builds)? Copland was supposed to be the turning point of classic Mac OS. Starting from 1994, its intention was to introduce true multitasking and protected memory, among other underlying features previously unavailable to the Macintosh. Externally, it was commonly known as System 8. The project was accumulating new features quickly but the development was significantly off track before it was finally cancelled in the Summer of 1996. Apple purchased NeXTSTEP before the end of that year from which they would base their new OS (Mac OS X, shipped in 2001) and the real Mac OS 8 that people used in 1997 was a more evolved version of Mac OS 7.
