Welcome to Discover Programming...
Welcome to Discover Programming for Macintosh and to the best development environment you can buy: Metrowerks CodeWarrior. Whether you are brand new to programming, or an experienced programmer just getting your first taste of CodeWarrior, we want your Discover Programming experience to be a good one.
• What's in the Package?
First and foremost, Discover Programming includes a complete, working copy of Metrowerks CodeWarrior. This is not a “light” version of CodeWarrior (like the one you might find in the back of a Macintosh programming book). This is the same version of CodeWarrior that ships on the $400 CodeWarrior Gold CD. The difference? Though this version of CodeWarrior will run on both PowerMacs and 68K-based Macs, it will only generate 68K-based applications (Don't worry, 68K-based applications will run just fine on a Power Macintosh). In addition, this version of CodeWarrior is not licensed for commercial software development (shareware development is OK).
But wait, there's more! You also get electronic versions of some cool Mac programming books. You get Learn C on the Macintosh (the brand new, 2nd edition) and Learn C++ on the Macintosh by Dave Mark as well as the Programming Starter Kit for Macintosh by Jim Trudeau. The Discover Programming CD includes all the source code from these books all tested and ready to run using the latest version of CodeWarrior. Just getting started with programming? Or perhaps you're a seasoned programmer and want to learn C. Either way, Learn C on the Macintosh is the place to start. If you already know C and want to learn how to add the Macintosh look and feel to your programs, then start off with Programming Starter Kit for Macintosh. Once you've mastered C and the art of Macintosh programming, you're ready for Learn C++ on the Macintosh.
The Discover CD also comes with four custom Apple Guide files (if you haven't used Apple Guide, you'll find it on the CD as well). There's one Guide file for each of the three programming books, as well as a Guide to some cool programming-related World Wide Web sites. The book Guides give you an easy way to launch the projects from that book, and the Web Guide lets you choose from a list of URLs, either passing the URL on to NetScape (assuming you already have NetScape up and running) or copying the URL to the clipboard so you can pass it on to a non-NetScape browser.
Danger, Will Robinson!!! Apple Guide depends on both the Apple Guide extension as well as QuickTime. Be sure you install both. You'll find all the files you need on the Discover CD.
Finally, be sure to scour the folders on the Discover CD. There are lots of goodies sprinkled throughout the CD. You'll find some cool tools, key extensions from Apple, along with a host of documentation. Check it out!
