Since the late 1950s, software developers have strived to write applications that were portable across computers and operating systems. Ironically, programmers using the newest technology - the Macintosh and Windows user-interface toolkits - have had to put aside this goal, because these toolkits are just too different. But wouldn't it be great if these differences could be hidden, so that programs with modern user interfaces - not just old-style programs - could be portable, too? XVT (Experimental Virtual Toolkit) is an attempt to do just that. It acts as an interface between an application program and a native user-interface toolkit, such as the Macintosh User Interface Toolbox, Microsoft's Windows and Presentation Manager, Digital Research's GEM, MIT's X Windows, or Sun's NeWS.
