What is ColorAlias?

Tired of going to the control panel to switch your monitor depth every time you play your favorite game? Or running your 8-bit paint program only to have it beep and quit because you are in B&W mode?  ColorAlias solves these problems and more!  With ColorAlias, you can create small application files that work like System 7 aliases.  The big difference is that when you double-click a ColorAlias file, it will switch your main monitor to the color depth you have pre-set, set the sound volume, and even turn off the Quadra's 68040 cache(if you have a Quadra of course!), all before running the original application.  And you can have ColorAlias switch the settings back to their original values when the application quits.

You can make new ColorAlias files two ways - the easiest way is to drag the application you want to make an alias for onto the ColorAlias application icon in the Finder.  Then select the options you would like, hit OK, and select where to save your new alias.  Alternately, you can double-click the ColorAlias application, then choose "Create ColorAlias File" from the File menu and select the application you want to create an alias for.  Then follow the settings/saving steps as before.

To use your new alias file, simply double click it. It will switch the monitor depth, set the sound level, and change the 68040 cache state, depending on the options you have set. Then it will run the original application, wherever it is on your hard disk.  You can move the application around and rename it, and the ColorAlias file will still find the original!  If for some reason ColorAlias gets really confused, it will ask you if you want to look for the original, at which point you can re-select the original application in a standard open file dialog.
