Glatorian Arena is a fighting game that was created to promote the January 2009 wave of LEGO BIONICLE sets. The player controls a Glatorian, biomechanical gladiators of the desert planet Bara Magna, who is challenged to ascend through the leagues of the Arena Magna to become the ultimate champion. Each of the five Glatorian Leagues contains five opponents (the other five Glatorian in the January wave of Glatorian sets) that the player must overcome.
The starting character is Gresh of the Jungle Tribe, with each of the other Glatorian being unlocked for play after the completion of each league. There are three different attacks to utilize in combat: a light attack, which is fast but deals relatively low damage, a heavy attack, which is slower but deals more damage, and the Thornax Launcher, which launches a Thornax projectile at the opponent, with the amount of damage dealt dependent on how long the player charged it for. The player can also parry attacks and move freely around the arena to alter the distance between them and the opponent.
Although the focus of the game is on the arena matches, the player can also leave the arena and talk to an assortment of Agori (villagers) gathered outside to learn more about the world of Bara Magna. There is also an additional gamemode, Spikeball, which is similar to rugby or basketball. Spikeball matches last exactly one minute and are played between teams of two Skrall and two Jungle Tribe Glatorian, with the player controlling the latter team. The objective is to score goals by getting the ball into the other team's goal, with the team with the most points winning when the timer runs out.
