Machines at War is a real time strategy game in a futuristic setting. The game only offers skirmish missions and doesn't feature either a campaign or a story.
Maps in the game are randomly generated resulting in a unique map in each skirmish. Maps come in different styles such as rock, meadow, ice and desert. The game features over 40 different structures and units. Like other RTS games the game requires players to eliminate other players. Buildings produce units and allow the player to research technologies to improve units. Units can be moved over the map to attack enemy units and structures. Special units are required to gather resources which are required to build units and structures.
In Machines at War all units leave track marks which allows players to track units back to the enemy base. Other tactical elements exist in bodies of water which can only be crossed by building bridges and forest which give units additional cover.
Aside from buildings that produce units or allow for research there are also defensive structures such as walls, gates and turrets which can be used to further defend the base.
Units include a variety of tanks, jeeps, trucks, jets, helicopters and VTOLs.
