What is CrossBasic DR1r7?

CrossBasic is basically REALbasic's alpha development stage.  It was renamed and released as REALbasic just months after this.  CrossBasic has a lot of REALbasic components and shares a lot of IDE similarities with REALbasic, tough this version is a little buggy and makes SheepShaver crash quite often.  To use this version of CrossBasic, you must first set your clock date back to June, 29th, 1997.

One of the major differences between CrossBasic and REALbasic is that the former could actually build the app as a Java applet! (and as a 68K/PowerPC binary too) Tough, CrossBasic lacks integrated language reference like RB has: Pressing [CMD-1] key combo for complete reference and real time (as you type) code suggestions are missing, so it would be hard to develop with CrossBasic today, not knowing which instructions you can use.  It also lacks some of REALbasic's properties, such as current object's self-reference (e.g.: me.width)

From the ReadMe file:

CrossBasic is an implementation of the BASIC language on the Macintosh which is tightly coupled with a set of visual components.

The primary features of CrossBasic are:
·  Object-oriented implementation of the BASIC language with automatic garbage collection;
·  High level support for GUI elements;
·  Fully integrated visual development/debugging environment;
·  Advanced dynamically recompiling compiler - giving all of the benefits of an interpreter, while still running at fully compiled speed;
·  Development is supported on both 68k and PowerPC Macintoshes, running native on both platforms;
·  Build standalone applications for 68k and Power Macintoshes (including Fat applications), as well as building 100% Java Applets.
