What is Handy?

Handy/MacOS is an Atari Lynx emulator for the Macintosh.

Handy/MacOS supports reasonably good compatibility with Atari Lynx ROMs. There are a few titles which don't work, but the majority seem to work pretty well. Handy also supports full sound emulation. For consistent full speed, a 150MHz or faster PowerMac is necessary. Handy can also scale the Lynx video by up to 500% to provide full screen on resolutions up to 800*600. Handy/MacOS was the first emulator on the Macintosh to support loading compressed ROM images - an idea which has since been adopted by many of the other emulators out there. Additional video modes can be added to this emulator via my Blitter Library plugin.

Handy was initially developed by Keith Wilkins for Windows. He released the full source code to v0.4.0 expecting other developers to take over, but unfortunately the only person to work on it refused to send the changes back to Keith for integration into the main code. For this reason, Handy has been resumed by Keith - and the source for newer versions is unlikely to be made available publicly.

Compatibility notes

Version 0.8.2 requires CarbonLib 1.2 or later, or Mac OS X.
Starting with version 0.9.0, it requires Mac OS X 10.2 or later.
- Quartz Extreme compatible AGP graphics card recommended.
Starting with version 0.9.6, it requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.
