What is SuperSpool 5.0?

The major spooler for the ImageWriter is SuperSpool from SuperMac Software. It sells for $59.95, and versions of the program sold from late 1987 on are compatible with the MultiFinder.

Older versions of SuperSpool installed as an application program. You started it automatically by setting it as the startup application, and then you could set a second application to start up after the spooler loaded. The newer versions are Inits. SuperSpool comes with a desk accessory called Print Queue, which displays the order of files in the print queue.

With the Print Queue desk accessory, you can change the order of files in the print queue..., pause and resume or cancel printing of a file, and remove files from the queue. Like most other spoolers, SuperSpool writes files to a spool folder, so it can recover from a system crash: The files remain in the queue during a crash, and printing will resume if you have to restart your Mac.

SuperSpool has no special features for managing files being printed by various users on a network. Everyone on a network can simultaneously use SuperSpool to print to a network-compatible ImageWriter, but you can't control the order of files printed. Each spooler sends its file to the ImageWriter, and has to wait if the printer is busy. (With the LaserWriter versions of this program, you can assign priority levels to spooled documents on a network...)

On the other hand, most ImageWriters aren't on networks or aren't used by many different users at the same time if they are. SuperSpool can return control of your Mac to you in seconds, which means far more productive Mac time than if you had to wait for the printout to finish.
