What is CD/DVD-ROM and Drive Setup for non-Apple manufactured drives?

In my own efforts to restore a PowerMac 7500, it took a fair amount of time to get the right CD-ROM extension and Drive Setup versions to make it possible to use the non-Apple branded DVD-ROM and hard drive I had. Trying to help fellow enthusiasts, I'm uploading the floppy image with these versions for any other classic, SCSI based, Macintosh when you can't source working Apple-branded/manufactured CD/DVD-ROM or hard drives. This floppy image contains the following utilities:

  • Apple CD-ROM Extension vD2-5.3.1 (11/18/1996 release date)
  • Apple Drive Setup v1.7.3 (5/15/1999 release date)
  • Aladdin Expander 5.5 Installer

The CD-ROM extension is a bugged version from Apple that does not perform the Apple drive firmware check and works with non-Apple SCSI drives. The Drive Setup is another bugged version that allows the partitioning/formatting of non-Apple SCSI hard drives. Finally, Aladdin Expander makes it easier to install the necessary software to expand compressed images without needing to uncompress them prior to upload/copy.

System Requirements

From Mac OS 7.1 up to Mac OS 8.5

Compatibility notes

IDE based Macintosh machines won't benefit from these as much since the IDE controllers removed the need for the Apple firmware check.
