What is Very Safe Mail? Very Safe Mail is a System extension that places an additional menu on your Macintosh menu bar. The menu commands can be used with almost all e-mail applications, including Claris Emailer, Eudora, and Netscape Navigator, to encrypt (or decrypt) both e-mail messages and attached data files. When you encrypt a message addressed to your correspondent, Very Safe Mail uses your secret key to encode the message and affix your “signature” to the message. Encryption both locks up the message and makes the message illegible to anyone who does not have a copy of your public key. The signature provides additional proof to your correspondent that the message actually originated from you, and not from someone else who may have counterfeited your e-mail address. When you send the message to your correspondent, they will use Very Safe Mail (and their copy of your public key) to both decrypt the message and to verify the signature. Two dialog boxes appear during the decryption process, to inform them that the message text can be decrypted as they do have the right key, and that the message actually came from you.
