An epic Egyptian adventure!
Lara embarks on a journey of discovery across Egypt, where she must overcome the most ingenious puzzles and infernal traps ever devised, and face terrifying evil from beyond the grave. With more twists and turns than an Egyptian labyrinth, this is a heart-stopping action adventure; a Tomb Raider that truly offers... The Last Revelation.
- Explore tombs as a teenage Lara Croft, discovering her roots as an adventurer.
- New inventory system: combine accessories to enhance weapons, change ammo, and solve puzzles.
- Highly interactive environments: light torches, swing from ropes, and kick down doors.
- New weapons and tools: including revolver, crossbow, binoculars, and various types of ammo.
In some ways, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation ties the series back to its roots. Lara Croft — startlingly top-heavy at the age of 16 — starts out in a desperately annoying “training” mode that fails to train almost as much as it fails to entertain. The control method is as unintuitive as ever, but get past this initial obstacle and you’ll find yourself immersed in the most graphically adept and technically ambitious game in the series.
Lara now swings on ropes and kicks down doors. More important, she can activate switches (to control secret doors and movable statues) from afar using weapons or projectiles. Add to that some interesting vehicle sections and neat set pieces — such as the level where Lara has to make her way along the roof of a speeding train. Even the graphic engine has undergone a bit of spit and polish. Better light sourcing, graphics card support, and an enhanced polygon engine (for both characters and backdrops) make for all-round prettier play.
Sadly, though, this game, like its predecessors, relies on ill-conceived puzzles and badly defined objectives. The game takes place entirely in Egypt, so many locations look the same — a problem you’ll find annoying as you get confused and lost for the umpteenth time. The genuinely involving (and creepy) plot makes up for the haphazard placement of switches and puzzles. A real mystery story unfolds cinematically between levels with some of the best full motion video sequences on the Mac.
In short, the Last Revelation is a huge, attractive, and ultimately rewarding Macintosh adventure — but Tomb Raider groupies should beware. If you have the other games in the series, this one doesn’t offer much more.
