MacPOD 1.4 is a real-time, asynchronous, sample-based granular synthesis application named in honour of the POD system developed by Barry Truax at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby (Canada). Granular synthesis is a technique whereby many thousands of audio snippets (usually under than 1/20 th of a second in duration) are combined to create surprisingly dramatic results. While individual grains might be heard as little more than audio clicks, masses of grains create a sense of volume and grandeur difficult to emulate through other techniques. Another interesting benefit of sample-based granular synthesis is the ability to time-stretch (slow down) a sound without affecting it's inherent pitch. Until recently, real-time granular synthesis was the preserve of a few university research centres. And while a number of programs (shareware and commercial, real-time and non-real-time, for both Mac and PC) have emerged recently, none offer the efficiency, grain density and ease-of-use of
MacPOD.
