What is SmoothTalker? SmoothTalker was the 1980's best voice synthesizer and it was running on any Macintosh from even the very first one in 1984. SmoothTalker could read long text documents with variable sentence length, paragraphs and punctuations. SmoothTalker would adapt the voice pitch, stress and inflections through around 1200 rules based on punctuations and such. Can you believe nowadays that such an incredible piece of software, complete, was less than 200KB in size? Version 1.0 from 1984 is the initial release and only has a male voice. Version 2.1 from 1986 has both a male and a female voice and introduced a fine tuning panel (speech settings window) letting the user change volume, pitch, speed, tone and voice both globally (entire document) or for single selections of text! You could for instance have a sentence read super fast by a male voice and another sentence read slower by a female voice.
