(There's no video for OIDS 2.0.1 yet. Please contribute to MR and add a video now!)
Originally released by FTL software in 1990, this is a newer version of OIDS that was modified to make it usable in OS9 and released in 2002. The version uploaded here is version 2.0.1 which has the latest (using the term "latest" loosely) bugfixes from 2003. It looks and plays essentially the same as the original version of OIDS but has additional features and significantly improved frame rates and resolution. The controls are similar to the classic game "Asteroids Deluxe" in that you can rotate, shoot, and turn on a shield to temporarily protect you from damage. However, it also plays like Choplifter, because instead of flying through space you are over a planet and you need to rescue Oids from the surface and take them ot your mothership. It's really a great game, and if you haven't played it before I'm sure you'll enjoy it if you liked either Asteroids or Choplifter. On a high end OS9 Mac, you can run this game in up to 1920x1600 resolution at very high frame rates!
The game is playable but has a nag screen and you don't get as many lives as you do with a registered version. I've tried to find a way to contact the developer and register but I haven't had any luck so far. If I do, I'll return and edit this and let you know what I found out.

Main game. Requires Stuffit Expander 5.5 or later / compressed w/ Stuffit
Expanding_Galaxy_I.sit (166.53 KiB / 170.53 KB)
User created addon levels for OIDS 2.0.1 Over 45 additional levels, playtested and categorized into four experience levels (Easy, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert.) / compressed w/ Stuffit
Runs great under System 7.5.3 through OS 9.2.2 but and also runs under "Classic" mode in versions of OS X that support Classic mode. However, it's a little more choppy than running natively under OS 9.
Emulating this? It should run fine under: SheepShaver
