Smile is an AppleScript IDE. It provides facilities for script editing, debugging, and testing. The debugger, which provides line-by-line debugging and access to Apple Event codes, is possibly Smile's most powerful feature. The text editer, because it uses WASTE, is not restricted to a 32 KB text limit for scripts like Apple's Script Editor. It is also able to access application and scripting addition dictionaries, and is fully scriptable itself. In addition to all the above, it can create custom dialogs, similar to what can be done with Dialog Director, but not quite as powerful.
Satimage, the publisher of Smile, is a French company in the industrial machine vision business. Industrial machine vision involves the use of devices such as video cameras and lasers to monitor and automate production lines. Satimage provides both hardware and software for machine vision systems. The software component is an AppleScript-based application called SMI, which is customized as needed for each installation. Because of the breadth of SMI's AppleScript implementation, configuration and reconfiguration are accomplished by modifying or adding scripts. The name "Smile" is an acronym for "SMI Limited Edition".
