What is NeXbar 1.0b2?

NeXbar is a NeXTSTEP/OPENSTEP style dock/application launcher for Mac OS X. It provides an invisible area on the screen where commonly used applications can be dragged to and launched.

Features

  • drag applications (carbon, cocoa, classic) from finder to right edge of screen to dock them in NeXbar
  • drag a tile out of NeXbar to undock it (remove it from NeXbar)
  • re-arrange applications by dragging them around within NeXbar
  • launch applications by single or double clicking on them
  • move NeXbar vertically by dragging the topmost tile up/down
  • move NeXbar horizontally by cmd-dragging the topmost tile left/right
  • contents/location are remembered upon subsequent launches
  • preferences to set the transparency/size of tiles
  • preference to reset the root icon (topmost tile)
  • cmd-click to order dock forward/backward
  • plug-in architecture for writing dock plug-ins/modules
  • preference to specify the number of clicks to launch an application
  • plug-ins preference panel for selecting which plug-ins to load and to specify the order in which they show up in NeXbar
  • drag files onto application tile in NeXbar to open it with that application
  • elipses (dots) are shown for applications that are not running and are not shown for ones that are
  • clicking (based on click preference) on an already running application in NeXbar brings it to the foreground
  • clicking (based on click preference) on topmost tile launches finder
  • applications are highlighted in the dock for the duration of the launch even when launched from elsewhere in the operating system (i.e. Finder)
