What is WireTap?

Make recordings of your Mac's audio OUTPUT. This barebones no-frills little freeware program does just one thing and does it well. Choose to have one of many file compressions, or none (no compression is best) - choose to record all the way from 8kHz 8bit mono to 48kHz 16bit stereo. WireTap cannot target the audio of individual apps, tho the interface was made with future targeting in mind, it for now always records the composited master audio output. This program is useful in noise reduction via preventing the digitally generated digital recordings from being communicated in analog. If you're getting skips in recordings then try using a slower destination device, such as a device attached via USB2.

In addition to the /Applications/WireTap/ folder v1.0.0 installs a kernel extension named AmbrosiaAudioSupport.kext ... perhaps needing a kext to do this job is why it's seldom seen in other programs. WireTap v1.0.0 ceases to function in OS X 10.4 Tiger apparently due to the .kext no longer interacting with the OS. If anyone can repair the kext and make this work in Tiger please spill the beans.

Compatibility notes

Warning: a bug in this v1.0.0 concerns buffer overflow or underflow. Recording to any SATA drive is causing my system to drop "chunks" of recorded audio, whereas recording to a slower device (attached via USB2) is good! Extensive testing shows about 50 percent of my around 5 minutes each SATA recordings end up missing at least one chunk, and it's VERY difficult to detect that a chunk is missing just by "proof listening" the new file. Instead, when I have access to the original, I can compare song lengths to discover the errors. The smallest possible missing chunk seems to be about 0.33 to 0.4 seconds long (using highest sound details). Be mindful of this.

Also, using WireTap's built in compression ability is bad (testing AIFF 4:1 and others). Sound becomes distorted to a varying degree, from barely detectable all the way to introducing a buzzing noise in the destination file. Something like a cumulative rounding error producing a resonance. Recommending NONE compression setting.

Emulating this? It could probably run under: QEMU
