What is System 7.1 (LC 575) (691-0209-B,ZP) (CD)?

This document contains late-breaking information about your Macintosh and system software version 7.1. It provides information that has changed since your computer manuals were published.

If a topic is covered in both this document and your manuals, use the information in this document.  For all other questions about using your Macintosh, see the manuals that came with your computer.

When you are finished reading this document, choose Quit from the File menu.

•  APPLE IIe CARD FOR THE MACINTOSH

To use the Apple IIe Card with system software version 7.1 on your Macintosh,
you need the Apple IIe Card software, version 2.2 or later.

When an Apple IIe Card is installed in your Macintosh, you cannot connect to an
Ethernet network.  If you want to use Ethernet, you must remove the Apple IIe
Card.

•  PROGRAMMER’S KEY SYSTEM EXTENSION

The functions previously provided by the Programmer’s Key system extension are provided as an integral part of your Macintosh.  As a result, the Programmer’s Key system extension is not compatible with your Macintosh.

Do not install the Programmer’s Key extension in your system.  If you previously installed the Programmer’s Key extension, follow these steps to remove it from the Extensions folder before you install system software version 7.1:
1. Create a folder named “System Extras” on your hard disk.
2. Open the System Folder.
3. Open the Extensions Folder.
4. Drag the Programmer’s Key extension into the System Extras folder.
5. Choose Restart from the Special Menu.

•  IF INSTALLATION FAILS WHEN REINSTALLING SYSTEM SOFTWARE VERSION 7.1

At times, you might need to reinstall system software version 7.1.  The reinstallation may fail if your existing System file contains fonts with names having more than 31 characters.

If this happens, follow these steps:
1. Open the System Folder and drag the System file to the desktop.
2. Choose Shut Down from the Special menu.
3. Insert the Install Me First floppy disk or CD.
4. Turn on your computer.
5. When the Installer opens, proceed with the installation.  (If you need instructions on how to use the Installer, refer to your user’s guide.)
6. When the installation is complete, restart your Macintosh.
7. If you wish to use the fonts that were installed in your old System file, open the System file on the desktop and drag the font icons to the System Folder icon.

If you previously installed additional software that modified the old System file, and you want the same software with system software version 7.1, you need to reinstall that software after you install system software version 7.1.

•  USING ADOBE TYPE MANAGER WITH SYSTEM SOFTWARE VERSION 7.1

In system software version 7.1, a new folder named “Fonts” stores all screen and printer fonts.  Fonts you drag to the System Folder icon are automatically installed in the Fonts folder.

If you use Adobe™ Type Manager (ATM), but are not seeing smooth type onscreen, it’s because your version of ATM doesn’t allow you to use fonts in the Fonts folder.  (It looks for fonts in the Extensions folder.)  You must move any PostScript™ printer fonts located in the Fonts folder to the Extensions folder.  You can obtain a new version of ATM that works with the Fonts folder.

•  APPLESHARE SERVER SOFTWARE

To install an AppleShare file server or print server on a Macintosh using system software version 7.1, you need AppleShare server software version 3.0.1.

•  USING YOUR MACINTOSH AS A NETWORK ROUTER

If you are using your Macintosh as a network router, you will want to upgrade to the latest version of the Network Software Installer disk (version 1.4.2 or later).

•  MacTCP USERS: CHECK VERSION BEFORE YOU INSTALL SYSTEM SOFTWARE VERSION 7.1

To use MacTCP with system software version 7.1, you need MacTCP version 1.1.1 or later.  If your MacTCP version number is 1.1 or earlier, remove MacTCP from your System Folder before you install system software version 7.1.

•  ATTACHING AN EXTERNAL SCSI DEVICE

If your Macintosh has an internal CD-ROM drive, the drive uses SCSI ID number 3.  To attach an external SCSI device to your Macintosh, you will need to choose a SCSI ID number other than 3.

•  MacCHECK UTILITY

A utility named MacCheck has been pre-installed on your Macintosh and is located in the Utilities folder.  MacCheck checks your software and hardware so it can give you a profile of (information about) your Macintosh.  If you need to call Apple’s phone support because you are experiencing a problem with your Macintosh, please open MacCheck first, so the information is available to help you and the phone support people to quickly diagnose the problem.

MacCheck also checks for corrupted system files and folders on your hard disks and unlocked floppy disks.  MacCheck provides on-line help about the information in its profile of your Macintosh, as well as information about what to do if MacCheck detects any problems with your Macintosh.

• BUTTON DISABLER CONTROL PANEL

A control panel named Button Disabler has been pre-installed on your Macintosh and is located in the Control Panels folder.  Please note that if you move this control panel out of the Control Panels folder and then attempt to use it, it may not work correctly.

Compatibility notes

This document provides late-breaking news about System 7.1.  This information is not in the documentation that came with your software.  For all other questions, refer to your Macintosh software documentation.

APPLESHARE SERVER SOFTWARE

To install an AppleShare file server or print server on a Macintosh using System 7.1, you need AppleShare server software version 3.0.1.

APPLE IIe CARD SOFTWARE FOR THE MACINTOSH LC II

To use the Apple IIe Card with System 7.1 on a Macintosh LC II, you need version 2.2 of Apple IIe Card Software. You should upgrade to version 2.2 only if you are using your LC II with System 7.1. Apple IIe Card Software 2.2 may also be used with the original Macintosh LC, but it is not required.

INSTALLING SYSTEM 7.1 ON A MACINTOSH QUADRA 700 AND 950

To install System 7.1 on a Macintosh Quadra, use the Installer program’s Easy Install option, or choose “System software for any Macintosh” in the Installer’s Customise window. If you use the Macintosh Quadra option in the Customise window, some parts of the Monitors control panel will not work correctly.

MacTCP USERS: CHECK VERSION BEFORE YOU INSTALL SYSTEM 7.1

To use MacTCP with System 7.1, you need version 1.1.1 or greater. If the version number is 1.1 or earlier, you need to remove the file from your System Folder before you install System 7.1.

IF THE SYSTEM 7.1 INSTALLATION FAILS

The installation may fail if your existing System file contains fonts with names having more than 31 characters.

If this happens, follow these steps:

1. Open the System Folder and move the System file to the desktop.
2. Restart the Macintosh using the Install disk. When the Installer opens, proceed with the installation (refer to your manual for help).
3. Restart the Macintosh when the installation is completed.
4. If you wish to use the fonts that were installed in your old System file with System 7.1, open the System file on the desktop and drag the font icons to the System Folder icon. The fonts are moved to the Fonts folder and can now be used.

If you had installed additional software that modified the System file, you will need to reinstall it after you install System 7.1.

USING ADOBE TYPE MANAGER WITH SYSTEM 7.1

In System 7.1, a new folder named “Fonts” stores all screen and printer fonts. Fonts you drag to the System Folder are automatically installed in the Fonts folder. If you use Adobe Type Manager, but are not getting smooth type onscreen, you must move any PostScript printer fonts located in the Fonts folder to the Extensions folder.
