What is Macintosh BASIC 0.335 (MacBASIC)?

Macintosh BASIC was a beta release of a program that should have been, but was cancelled. The fact that Microsoft was involved in it all just makes the whole story that much sadder. Macintosh BASIC was a promising development environment that had the ability to access the Macintosh Toolbox. It was said to have performed better in its beta stage than Microsoft BASIC did when it was first released!
