What is CodeWarrior DR1 Gold?

Welcome to the first developer release of Metrowerks CodeWarrior.

Please make sure you read the release notes in the DR1 Release Notes folder.

The compilers and tools on this CD have been released so that you may prepare yourselves for the new Macintosh architecture to be introduced in the first half of 1994.

It is with great pleasure that we bring these tools to you. Hopefully we can participate in our small way in your success, whether in commercial software development, in-house development, or personal programming.

The compiler technology and development tools melded together in the CodeWarrior package tries to strike a balance between powerful tools and ease of use. Our objective is to make sure you have the tools you need to get the job done. We will do everything possible to make sure that this is the case. We intend to make CodeWarrior on Macintosh our design center for state-of-the-art development tools.

The compiler technology contained on this CD is based on an advanced architecture where multiple language front-ends (C/C++ and Pascal) share multiple back-ends (680x0 and PowerPC601) as well as a common development environment.

This ensures that as you go forward towards PowerPC-based Macintosh, you also conserve your investment in your installed code base on 68K Macintosh and your code base remains backward-compatible.

Using the same front-end across different processors reduces source-code compatibility problems. Using the same back-end code generator ensures equal code quality for C/C++ and Pascal as well as full binary compatibility.

The compilers are at various stages of completion. The C compilers have both been validated via the PlumHall ANSI C validation suite and certain very large software products. The C++ compiler parts are in the process of being validated on both 68K and PowerPC via Suite++ from PlumHall and through large software ports.

The C++ compiler on 68K compiles and links pointer-based MacApp as well as our own new framework, Metrowerks PowerPlant. The PowerPC C++ compiler compiles and links Metrowerks PowerPlant in native mode, giving you the first fully native application framework on PowerPC Macintosh.

The PowerPC C/C++ compiler is a fat binary. You can build software on a PowerPC Macintosh or you can build on a 68K-based Macintosh and then drag the binary to a PowerPC Macintosh for execution. It is both a native compiler (on PowerPC) and a cross compiler (on 68K).

The 68K Pascal compiler is an early development release, It conforms substantially to MPW Pascal v3.3 excluding Object Pascal extensions. It has passed the BSI validation suite and built some pretty large programs. It will also be released for PowerPC Macintosh in the 2nd quarter of 1994.

We are also proud to introduce two new debuggers, one for 68K, the other for PowerPC. Both debuggers use the PowerPlant framework to implement their document and symbolic views and both read standard SYM files generated by the compilers. Metrowerks programs may also be debugged with standard debuggers such as The Debugger from Jasik Designs.

Metrowerks PowerPlant is a very modern non-monolithic application framework. It implements a mixin architecture to reduce object size and fully supports the Apple Object Model. Applications written with PowerPlant are recordable and scriptable. PowerPlant Constructor, the view editor, accelerates development by making view design much easier.

The standard libraries for C and C++ (not yet released) are licensed from P.J.Plauger and supported by PlumHall. They track the emerging ANSI/ISO C++ standard. The C++ libraries are in final validation and will be released via CD and through Internet ftp in the near future.

On the international front, Metrowerks CodeWarrior has been localized for France, Germany, Japan, and Spain. All these versions of CodeWarrior are available on this CD.

Finally, we are working closely with tools vendors and Apple Computer to add open standards to CodeWarrior. These will include both scripting support and project manager access for external editors.
