What is Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord?

This famous computer translation of the Dungeons and Dragons zeitgeist, years in the making, proves emphatically that late is better than never. The pre-Macintosh incarnation of Wizardry, while bewitching, was forever bogged down in housekeeping. But Mac Wizardry takes full advantage of windowing and mousing and is a dream to play.

The plot is simple: create a party of six warriors that descend into a dungeon to retrieve an amulet from an evil wizard. Along the way, kill lots of monsters. (Villains come in amazing varieties, from Vorpal Bunnies to Medusalizards.) The game’s complexity comes in developing your warriors; your characters develop distinct personalities, and you can get quite attached to them. Believe me, wiien one of your sixth-level Samurais gets wiped out by a Foaming Mold on the fourth maze, you’ll feel as if your dog has died.

You need a lot of time to play this game. To expedite matters, I "cheat” a bit and use ready-made maps. The Book of Adventure Games includes this contraband.
