HyperCard is difficult to describe because it has two very different faces. From one point of view; HyperCard is a system that lets you build Macintosh applications with the same point-and-ciick interface that you’ve come to expect from most Macintosh programs. But you may also take an entirely passive approach by just running applications developed by other people.
HyperCard could be compared to a portable cassette recorder that both plays and records tapes. HyperCard runs ready-made applications. It also comes with all the graphics and information-handling tools necessary to create full-fledged applications, including the ability to open external applications and documents directly from within HyperCard.

HyperCard™ is a new kind of application—a unique information environment for your Apple® Macintosh™ computer. Use it to look for and store information—words, charts, pictures, digitized photographs—about any subject that suits you. Any piece of information in HyperCard can connect to any other piece of information, so you can find out what you want to know in as much or as little detail as you need.
