Dear Sir/Madam! I am from Hungary, I bought an old Apple Macintosh Powerbook 150 notebook. The notebook was dead, but I could fix it. It was a little 47uF capacitor short circuit in the power supply side.  I switched on the computer, and it runned german MAC OS 7.1.1. I wanted to reinstall the operating system on the computer. I found installer floppy images on winworldpc.com, and I wrote this to floppy disks. I have already formatted...

Installing Mac OS X 10.4.2 from USB (Multi-Disc Installation)

I had a fair bit of trouble when initially trying to get Mac OS X 10.4.2 onto my 14-inch G4 iBook. It would get through the first disc just fine, but when it came time to install items from the second disc, the installation would not see my partition no matter what I tried. I tried to unmount and remount it as read only, I tried multiple USBs, I tried to get it all onto one USB, but no matter what it wouldn't work. The method I have here is...

Mac Software for Programmers

I'm a long time Mac user from Germany, mostly interested in programming. My favorite language is C. I want to draw your attention to a fine programming environment from Apple itself. It is called "Programmers Workshop" or short: MPW. This is a complete programming and command shell (a bit like a C-shell) with two permanent windows, one is the source code editor, the other is the command window for input and ouput. I've...

Macintosh Software Preservation on Linux

IMPORTANT: NEVER UNPACK OR MOVE FILES FROM CLASSIC MACOS OUTSIDE OF CLASSIC MACOS. Because non-MacOS operating systems and filesystems only have data forks, doing so will discard the resource forks and corrupt your files. (It's similar to how copying your Linux files to a FAT-formatted USB stick will throw away their permission bits, but more catastrophic.) While things like Netatalk are capable of storing resource forks on non-Macintosh...

Modify Apple's DVD Player to run with Macsbug

This article originally appeared on resexcellence.com Modify Apple's DVD Player to run with Macsbug After touting the advantages of Macsbug, it appears that Apple's DVD Player 2.0 won't launch if the debugger is installed. This simple modification to the player application allows the two to exist harmoniously. We will use ResEdit to modify the data fork of the application, so you will need to download and...

Rebuilding the desktop

The following applies to Mac OS 7, 8 and 9.  One thing that only Mac users were accustomed to back in the 1990's was rebuilding the desktop.  This allowed to solve some benign problems on your Mac that could soon become so annoying that it could ruin your day.  Symptoms that would benefit from a desktop rebuild are: Files and applications icon replaced by a blank/white sheet Documents that cannot be opened anymore,...

Running Basilisk II emulator for the first time

This howto article assumes you know how to unzip a .zip file and do basic Windows tasks like create folders.  I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium, but this howto should work fine on Win 8 and Win 10. Download the 2015-02-26 build of Basilisk II (BasiliskII--2015-02-26----68k-color-emulator-with-floppy-support.zip) from Macintosh Repository (MR). Send files to an old Macintosh with modems

Sending files with serial modems   Introduction This is akind in principle to doing it with just a serial cable except that you need more stuff and different software to accomplish the same goal. So if you want something simpler to accomplish file transfer and that is more reliable, I'd recommand you do it with just a regular serial cable. This is specifically for people that want to recreate modem communications. This...

Shaving The Sheep! Mac OS on Windows (some thoughts and pointers)

I always tend to run emulators on my machine. With that in mind, I do have hours of VMs in Virtual PC, VirtualBox, VMware, QEMU, and SheepShaver under my belt. But I've first used PPC Macs in high school, and now that I can emulate them, I would like to share some of my experiences here, as well as some pointers. Please take note that you are encouraged to give me a few pointers of your own: leave them in the comments! My Mac OS...

Using a 3rd Party USB Card in a PowerMac 7300

Instead of being continually frustrated with SheepShaver, although an amazing piece of emulation software, I decided to resurrect my old PowerMac 7300. The problems I had were that the CMOS battery was dead, and the hard drive was tiny, only 6GB. The battery was replaced with one from Amazon for about $8.00  I had a stack of older hard drives, luckily one that was IDE and 120GB in size. Under OS 9, the OS needs to be installed in the...
